All Cops Are Human

sometimes sound stereotype
sometimes bigotry
describing life in this world: nuance dips its beak
moments: they don’t live alone
circumstance matters
and all events depend
have you played the game you judge,
fat drunk sofa quarterback?
every man is island and sea
numbers simplify complex reality
judgment of human things: a man’s deficiency
his eyesight is much too short
his knowledge broad, not deep

Original & Sequel

Agnes, never tell ‘em what you do
when brother Billy sneaks into your room
Mommy and Daddy are going on a date tonight
Billy, keep your sickness to yourself
when we’re young thoughts are loud and unrestrained
wisdom takes about fifteen years to grow
Mommy, don’t you know you can’t trust boys?
Agnes needed your protective arms
you knew better, it was in your family, too
now Daddy’s lost his special little girl
Billy pumped his sickness in her head
Mommy and Daddy went out on a date tonight
and they came home to a scene so horrible
Billy’s silent now and all grown up
chasing babysitters around with his knife
mature competence calms the need for boastful voice
we are horror movies on a loop
the audience knows what the killer’s gonna do
he grows and bulks up, but stays broken inside
and somehow stays alive to pop up in the sequel

it’s time to work, but stuff stuck fast
sewn seeds of sloth reliably reap rust
tools in hand but still the work feels mighty tough
maybe today we’ll just sit here
maybe tomorrow is the day
we’ll hammer at the nails to scratch an itchy brain
but tonight we hear the senses whispering
“you had a chance today but you did nothing”
you gotta lube it, then let it sit
every day thump it with your fist
then again we lube it, then let it sit
every day thump it with your fist
no fuckin’ movement, this stuff stuck fast
patience can deceptively look like a nap
while you sleep the penetrating oil works
faith means trusting in a useful system
sit, think, act, sit, think, act
in between the actions some plans get hatched
somehow the brain works behind the scenes
a miracle, mundane, but life-changing
lube it, then let it sit
every day thump it with your fist
then again we lube it, then let it sit
every day thump it with your fist
get the wrench on, and give a handle tug
a crack rang out and something budged
now the senser is settled down
and the map for next time is outlined out

Leave It To Bever

every town has one of these
“i remember charlie bowles”
russellville’s just south of hoyt
we should see it coming but we don’t
little Mikey and Bobby
all the little siblings stalked
there’s still mystery about
what [REDACTED] did at home
was Mikey’s soul born black?
or did Bobby burn it up?
they’re scared of demons in that town
it seems they always seem to wake back up
bud’s gun shop is for heroes
but demons rot away good souls
bodies strewn around the house
and glassy eyes all around the town
they seemed like a nice family
kept their children to themselves
they seemed like a nice family
we don’t know neighbors or ourselves
little Crystal has the gene
a broken girl in Broken town
bulldoze the crime scene down
so we can pretend it never was
a family gets a new baby
change her name: altered birthright
never ever read the truth
keep the horror out of honest light
autumn comes along each year
windows get shuttered up tight
ammo sells out all through town
the irony: defense from flame with flame
easy answers aren’t around
should we act, or just sit tight?
every year Autumn will cry
not on halloween, but in july
we should’ve seen it coming

Do What I Don't

“life happens to folks,” but that is not human
it’s an animal sleeping in a pen
man’s actions push back against “shit happens”
just check what happens when he walks up and looks down a cliff
real life won’t come from reading others’ tales
you gotta work them muscles sore and strong
the theories begin but they don’t get to finish
the work is only done with active commitment
self-hatred kills humanity
do what I don’t - unacted thoughts immobilize
bugs don’t burn out but they don’t ever learn
you better yank your brain back from the Beast
whispered thoughts hit then the body starts to twitch
prepare for painful things you can’t not know
self-knowledge calms insanity
do what I don’t - purge your closet, show the bones
self-deception cannot fool the soul
do what I don’t - truth moves outward from within
everything’s a metaphor for everything
all bits bow to Nature’s rules
zoom in, it fits; and then we zoom on out, it fits
just watch how water flows and how fuel burns
some brains don’t get to enjoy things
do what I don’t - don’t compete at others’ games
self-acceptance bears humanity
do what I don’t - formulate then play your game
bladder full, walk toward the flames
