you thought, “I need one teammate”
you walked out on the town
you loved Vin Scully’s call
when Kirk Gibson hobbled out
you walked back home with someone
you thought of two fist-pumps
you thought, “I’ve joined the club
of normal people” crunching sums
you thought, “if only I
did not feel so alone..........”
you thought, “I can solve this
solo silent strong”
you thought “I’ll work it out
once the kids come along”
you dreamed of them smart and strong
now they dream about a shotgun
if only I’d been taught to see
the world hidden from me
taught by history
if i can learn to read
the lessons in the metaphors
all spread in front me
you thought “hard work will open space
for the winner to come out”
misled by loud talk
devoid of meaty clout
you thought, “I’ve finally solved how
I can hold these feelings down”
the dalai lama’s doing fine
and men imprisoned love their minds
socrates is dead
still teaching: know thyself
the stoics know that Mr. Gibson’s
at peace with himself

why’s this blood still with me?
why won’t it respond to scrubbing?
what message is it seeping?
starting to wonder if my elbow sprung a leak
at night it spills around me
crusts in every flesh crevice
it overcomes my night prayers
wake up in the morning smeared in the bloody sheets
some truth exists in warm blood
it gushes ’til it’s soaked up
fresh language keeps on flooding
I’m sopping in a lesson my mind struggles to reach
is ignorance the right thing?
or deep dissecting knife hacks?
is this ghost good or evil?
read and write perplexed why nothing seems to wipe up clean
cold heart thawed out for me
she whines cuz she don’t own me
no human knows another
creeping in and out and stealing things just like a thief
why’s this blood still with me?
we seek out new warm heartbeats
rehydrate crust with wet blood
pile up the victims ’til the dagger comes for me
